| Administrator | You heard wrong. It isn't in my top 5 because I don't support leaving flaming piles of crap on someone's doorstep anymore than I do on their computer. Norton does really well... when detecting last month's top virii.

Thanks for making this thread. I've been using AVG for a year or so but lately it has been finding viruses in really old folders that it didn't find them in the week before. I uninstalled AVG and tried Kapersky, but it gave me a lot of problems. It couldn't connect to the updater (maybe because I was using the free trial?) and then it told me it would take 3 days to scan my pc. >_< I wasn't able to run anything while it was scanning so I gave up with that one, uninstalled and am trying NOD32 now. So far it seems pretty good. I am able to listen to music and such while it is scanning. It seems like other people did not have problems with Kapersky stalling their pc though? I'd really like to have the best program I can, but I need something that doesn't commandeer my pc for long periods of time.

Kaspersky is not especially common (compared to a lot of trash) unfortunately, so many firewalls don't recognize it by default. Both of the top two listed should do so though.

I used to have Norton, but it slows my PC a loooot. I have researched the net and decided on AVG. Until now I find AVG the best. It barely takes any resources and has always caught all kinds of viruses from the net and the common bugs from USB's. In addition, every morning it updates automatically.

AVG has more false positives than any AV I have ever used. Even NOD32, with its rabid heuristic scanner, doesn't make so many mistakes.

AVG's heuristic scanner (this is more a problem in the free version than pro since there are more settings to deal with the issue) is overly agressive when it comes to scanning for trojans. This is especially the case with game loading software (updaters are very frequently flagged as trojans) and programs that require internet access to verify license info at startup. This used to be NOD32's problem, but the more recent versions have taken care of it to some degree. AVG, and even KAV recently have had similar trouble. I should imagine it will pass in time as it always does, but it still is bothersome.

This thread has been updated thanks to new data. Hopefully we'll get fewer people with bad AV suggestions posting here now... If you think yours is better than one of my top 5, you'd best have the data to back it up.

Alright, question about NOD32. =] Does anyone have problems with it hurting their internet connection? Lately, especially during the mornings, my pc will go through a bout where it can not stay connected to the internet. It will connect, stay on maybe 3 minutes, disconnect for 3 minutes, connect again for a few minutes, etc. My isp is kind of shoddy so I chalked it up to that, but this morning I turned on my other computers and they had no trouble connecting at all, and their connections were stable. I tried to close NOD32 just for a bit to see if it got better, but...how do I close it? >_< I can't find an exit or close option.

Is there any decent AV program that is freeware? I doubt it, but if there is, anyone know? My Norton running out of subscription, and I want at least something free and better? Keylogger on my computer and wondering once it stops, keylogger wont be blocked.

I have no idea what you meant about a keylogger... but, Avira has a free version that is quite good (aside from not detecting adware).

The Keylogger records my keystrokes, so It could get passwords and stuff, considered a spywares I guess.

I guess you could call a keylogger spyware... I typically call it a trojan and it should have been deleted by whatever AV you have now if it was detected.

Well I downloaded the Avira Personal Edition, and it didn't seem to detect it? It is a hidden folder file, and I guess it was already is recording right now since my Norton subscription ended yesterday.

Why haven't you deleted it? And I repeat my previous question as well... Why didn't Norton delete it if it was detected?

Well, Norton blocked it, but it didn't give me an option to delete it.

If you're using Avira to scan, make sure to enable scanning of all files. That shouldn't affect this situation much since Norton already took care of the issue, but just in case...
