Student Ross Davidson, 19, was having a quiet night in with his girlfriend when three hooded raiders burst into his flat. She could only watch helplessly as he was battered mercilessly with 3ft lengths of wood until he was fatally wounded with massive head injuries. Yesterday his killers were starting long jail terms after a jury found them guilty of murder. Kenneth Power, 23, must serve a minimum of 24 years and Graeme Duncan, also 23, will serve a minimum of 22 years for the savage attack in their victim's own home in Walker, Newcastle, in March.

Steven Gilbert, 23, who acted as lookout, was jailed for 10 years after admitting plotting the robbery.

After the hearing at Newcastle Crown Court, Ross's family paid tribute to his "gentle nature" and spoke of the senseless waste of life. His older brother Chris, 24, said: "Ross Davidson was not the only person that was robbed that night.

"My mother was robbed of a good son, my sister was robbed of her best friend and brother, I was robbed of my little brother. His nephews were robbed of a good uncle, his friends robbed of a good friend and the community robbed of something wonderful."

He added: "You can buy an Xbox now for about £130. Can you put a price on what the people mentioned have been robbed of?"
