Sony bigwig hints at coming PS3 price cut?

Sony's CEO Howard Stringer broaches the idea of a PS3 price cut, saying he may have answers by Christmas.

Despite multiple reports stating that a possible price cut for the PlayStation 3 is still as far as two years away, the console's premium price tag is clearly on the minds of top Sony executives. Sir Howard Stringer, CEO of Sony Corp, discussed the thought process behind delivering a price cut to the end consumer in an interview with the Financial Times on Thursday.

In the portion of the interview that focuses on the gaming industry, Stringer first described how the "Nintendo Wii has been a successful enterprise and a very good business model compared to [Sony's]" because its popular console is cheaper than the PS3.

"I think that the public would like the cost to be lower, there's no question about that," said Stringer.

The CEO then proceeded to explain how "PlayStation 3's travails are usually solved by time," citing a strengthening release schedule and the impending launch of Home this fall as signs that PS3's sales performance will improve.

When asked how much Sony can afford to lower the PS3's price, Stringer replied, "That's what we're studying at the moment; that's what we're trying to refine." Stringer added that he will be able to answer that question by Christmas.

Sixaxis Rumble Rumors Resound

While Sony has yet to make any official announcements, independent sources say a new design is in the works for the PS3 controller.

The lightweight Sixaxis may be beefing up if rumble is added.

According to reports by independent developer blog Inner Bits, Sony is designing a new controller that will incorporate force feedback into the PlayStation 3's Sixaxis game pad. The post claims that "two independent sources from Sony" have confirmed that the company has been working on prototypes for several months. A key developmental hurdle seems to be the excessive battery drain that the force feedback feature adds to a wireless controller.

The rumble feature was used extensively in the PS2's Dual Shock 2 controller, but was subsequently removed from the PS3's controller design as a result of the patent infringement lawsuit brought about by Immersion Technologies, a company specializing in the field of touch feedback technology. The suit has since been settled as of a few months ago, but all throughout the duration of the drawn out legal battle, representatives of Sony were known to question the relevance of rumble to next-generation gaming.

While the Inner Bits report offers some interesting food for thought, it remains under the category of rumor and speculation until these sources are named or until Sony comes forward with an official announcement.

With the inclusion of rumble and a price drop, I am now thinking about buying a PS3

PS3 is a pile of wank so far. Not many good games, I'd buy a 360 or Wii way before I'd get one. The only games it had going for it was MGS IV and GTA IV but now the 360 has the rights to GTA as well so there's not much allure. I work in a game store and There's been like 30 sales in comparison to god knows how many 360 and Wii's. The blue ray was a BAD idea, if your willing to pay 600 Euro for a console you might as well buy the best gaming system i.e the PC.

I got a PS3 and i really like it. Im waiting for some of the better games to come out, but Resistance fall of man was incredible!! Anyway cant wait for more of the games to come out. Unfortuantely im not aloud to bring my
PS3 to summer school cuz yea my parents know id fail xD.

Make a Japanese and Honk Kong PS store account.....the moon people get better demos and downloads that people in the US.

They do get more downloadable content. They got this demo up on the JP network called Folk Soul....it's so fucking badass....the main character of the game eats souls and gains powers...it's kinda like a RPG Devil May Cry.

I have an XBOX360 and i also want a ps3 since i had the previous 2 incarnations but the price is too high. Any reason why i should pay 600 dollars for it?

That's entirely up to you. I've had mine for like....3 months or so and I love it. I've had no problems. The reason I bought one was because everyone says it sucks. I don't listen to other people so I decided to try it myself. I bought it on a gamble plus I know the success of the PS2 is just gonna carry over to the PS3.

^ You bought it cuz people said it sucked? Screw people. I played SpiderMan 3 and people said it sucked. It wasn't the greatest game every but it wasn't as bad as people said (especially Gamespot). My only incentives for ps3 are LittleBigPlanet and of course FFXIII which i heard might go to the 360 also.

The FF rumor was killed a long time ago. I read it in a article that said that only gonna be a PS3 exclusive. I'll try to find the article.

^ I think that they will be FFXIII for all the systems. This Fabula Novia Crystallis thing spreads to different platforms like the cell phone and i think somewhere it said it would have one for the 360

Yeah but knowing Sony and Square, they are probably saying that to shut up the ps3 fanboys and the 360fanboys. I bet later on either this or next year you'll hear ff for the xbox 360. Anyways the ps3 needs a killer ap now. They have decent exclusives like Resistance Fall of man and umm anyways I will get ps3 just for Ratchet and Clank and the potential sequels like GOW3 and Okami 2.

What was the point of me giving you proof if you not gonna believe it anyway....anyhoo....the PS2's success will carry over to the PS3...I bought the PS3 for the freaking bargain ($600 dollar Blu-Ray player with Free Online Gaming) and for the titles of the PS2 to carry over. the Tales series, FF, and for all the other old and new series that are coming.

^ no you misunderstand me. I do think what you say is true but i also think that Square would be crazy not to make a 360 game too, its bad business. My one gripe besides the price tag is the lack of rumble pack. I loved the rumble pack.
