Production I.G to Launch New Anime Series at Otakon - Anime News Network

The Neu Bauhaus consulting firm has informed ANN that the Production I.G anime studio (Ghost in the Shell, Blood: The Last Vampire) will announce the details of its newest anime series at Otakon, the August 8–10 convention in Baltimore, Maryland. The new anime, whose official title has not been released yet, will feature character designs by Susumu Matsushita (written as "Shin Matsushita"). The series' main characters will be based on Kyoko Kano and Mika Kano, two Japanese celebrities who are models, media personalities, and industry guests at this year's Otakon. Production I.G is developing the anime in a partnership with the Fuji TV network, and plans to use its Otakon launch to present a global sales and marketing plan for the series.

While this doesn't sound remotely interesting at all, I'll end up checking this out if I can since I'll be at Otakon anyway.

Death Note Creators Confirmed to Launch Bakuman Manga

This year's 36th issue of Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine has confirmed on Monday that the Death Note writer/artist team of Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata are launching a manga called Bakuman in the next issue, which goes on sale on August 11. The magazine describes the new manga as "explosive." (The Japanese word for "explosion" is "bakuhatsu").

One Outs by Madhouse (Akagi/Kaiji staff) this October:

The September issue (on sale on August 10) of Kadokawa Shoten's Newtype magazine will announce that Shinobu Kaitani's One Outs baseball manga is being animated for television this October. Kaitani (Liar Game, Sommelier) drew the manga in Shueisha's Business Jump magazine from 1998 to 2006, and 19 compiled volumes have been published.

The story begins when Hiromichi Kojima, the star batter of the fictional Lycaons in Japan's Pacific League, heads to the southern Japanese island of Okinawa to train and bring himself out of a slump. There, he meet Tōa Tokuchi, a 134-kmph (83 miles per hour) pitcher and the undisputed king of a gambling form of baseball called "One Out." At Kojima's urging, Tokuchi signs up with the Lycaons under an unusual contract: he gets 5,000,000 yen (about US$46,000) for every out he pitches, but loses 50,000,000 yen (US$460,000) for every point he gives up.

Guin Saga next spring

The Internet retail website Rakuten Books is displaying the wraparound jacket band on Kaoru Kurimoto's 122nd and latest Guin Saga novel, which ships on Thursday and confirms that the story will be animated for television next spring. The heroic adventure series follows a "Conan-esque" character named Guin with a leopard mask on a fantasy land.

The first arc, the Marshes Episode, focuses on Guin's escape from invading Mongaul armies while he protects the young twin heirs of a defeated country. The series began in 1979, and Hayakawa Shobo has published 26 million copies since then. Famed artists Naoyuki Kato, Yoshitaka Amano, Jun Suemi, and Shinobu Tanno have drawn illustrations for the books.

The September issue (on sale on August 10) of Kadokawa Shoten's Newtype magazine will confirm that Minari Endo's Maria Holic romantic comedy manga will be animated for television. The story centers on a sophomore named Kanako who enrolls in all-girls school because she has a phobia of men and wants find her destined yuri partner. She meets a captivating freshman named Mariya who fits her criteria — except her seemingly ideal mate happens to be a cross-dressing sadistic boy.

Madhouse Still Working on Ninja Scroll 2 Plans

Masao Maruyama, the co-founder of the Madhouse anime studio, revealed at his Otakon 2008 panel today that his company is still working on plans for a sequel to the Ninja Scroll action anime film. However, he noted that Ninja Scroll 2 project still needs a script that is acceptable to himself and franchise creator Yoshiaki Kawajiri.

I know it's going to be hard to surpass the awesomeness of Ninja Scroll, but hurry up already. This has been in pre-production for years now on ANN. I can't wait till it comes out. Let's hope it'll have great action scenes like Stranger (although those kinda action scenes aren't really Kawajiri's style).

Yamato anime? Does this mean there will be Battlecruisers using their Yamato Cannon? Will it include all 3 races, or focus mainly on Terran vs Zerg conflicts?

Yoshinobu Nishizaki, the 73-year-old producer of the Space Battleship Yamato science-fiction ... new project is set in 2220, or 21 years after the first Yamato story. An expanding black hole threatens Earth, so three hundred million people set forth into space as part of an emigration operation. The transport fleet is attacked, and the Yamato leads the counterstrike. 38-year-old Susumu Kodai, the hero of the first series, is now a space captain, and he has a daughter named Miyuki with his wife Yuki (the heroine of the first series).
