Shinichi Chiaki is the top piano student at his university and an excellent violinist, but Chiaki doesn`t care about playing these instruments as much as he dreams of someday being a conductor. Chiaki, however, has several deeply rooted fears about traveling, and so finds himself "trapped" in Japan. Because he`s trapped, Chiaki starts to question exactly how far he can possibly go in music, especially when he`s passed over again and again for others he thinks are less worthy of musical scholarship and fame.

Recently dumped by his girlfriend for a "sausage" looking fellow, passed over for a chance to go overseas, removed from his star spot in the piano competition because he walked out on his piano instructor, Chiaki is at his limit. This is when he meets Nodame, or Megumi Noda. Nodame is a free — if filthy — spirit who reminds Chiaki that music can be fun. She reminds him what drew him to be a conductor in the first place and, in learning how to deal with Nodame, Chiaki learns how to deal with others. Chiaki begins to realize what is possible for him, even on the tiny island of Japan.

For Nodame, Chiaki is everything she isn't. Clean, neat, dedicated, studious and inherently arrogant about his accomplishments and capabilities, Chiaki constantly bullies her into being more serious about life. He sees potential in her and her abilities as a pianist that she doesn't care about. She loves Chiaki and wants to be with him, but, because she`s not serious about her piano studies nor her personal hygiene, Chiaki denies her affections again and again.

But Chiaki and Nodame complete each other in ways no other can, a musical compliment that neither of them can completely escape entirely. Watching them grow as people and musicians, and even as a couple, is an interesting ride.

Nodame Cantabile (のだめカンタービレ) is a manga by Tomoko Ninomiya. It received the 2004 Kodansha Manga Award for shojo.

Just watched the first episode and it's great! It's by the director of Honey & Clover. Animation by JC staff.
The music is good and the characters are funny and diverce. If you like music, comedy & romance you should definitely check this out.

Nodame Cantabile Debut Sets All Time Late Night Anime Ratings Record
The first episode of the JC STAFF TV anime Nodame Cantabile broadcast between 25:00-25:30 on Fuji Television Network, Thursday, January 11th. According to series production elements, the airing has logged the all time highest audience rating for a late night TV anime, netting a 5.4% share. The live action Nodame Cantabile drama has in the past nabbed an audience rating of 21.7% and an estimated 19 million viewers in one showing. Both adaptations are based on the musical comedy mangad by Tomoko Ninomiya. The past latenight anime ratings record holder was the George Morikawa manga-based Hajime No Ippo (Fighting Spirit) and its 4.8% share. That record has stood for 6 years. The achievement makes this series definetly one to continue watching in Japan and internationally for a possible licensing / localization fast track.

And then there were three of them . Episode 2 was great to. The Ending for this is great! Preview for the next ep. is funny. It's something that fool Nodame would fall for.

Well there isn't going on much right now. It looks like Chiaki (main character) is grouping up with other musicians right now (not that he wants to ). His main goal is to become a conductor.
I can see this becoming a great anime. I'm really diggin it so far.

Episode 3 was pretty funny. Masumi scares me a little. LMAO when he fainted when Chiaki voluntered.

Watched first 2 eps so far, Great job Hao, looks like you've spotted another keeper. Great show reminds me of Honey and Clover w/ its animation style, except the story is related to music rather than art..They are very abusive to the girl LOL.., and the main character sounds like Souske from FMP.

Not trying to be a homophobe, but that homo guy was f@(king SICK,,I am not being discriminatory, its my honest gut feeling, just freakin sick...honestly if I had a guy like him chasing me I wud make sure that me and my friends beat him to a pulp...thats just my gut feeling though, in a nice nondiscriminatory way.F@(k him. I have no problems w/ blacks, latinos, catholics, or any1, just a gut reaction, that the majority of us straight guys feel towards homo guys...

Dammn episode 4 was funny. I LMAO through the whole episode. This serie is gold. Stresemann is funny as hell. I wonder what the hell is going to happen. Is Noda really thinking of kissing him. The thought alone creeps the hell out of me.

I'm interested in this anime after watching the first episode!!! I love classical, so I'll enjoy this! And it's the same director who did Honey And Clover! So it has to be good!
