I play on both DGS (12k) and KGS(11k) (mainly at DGS because I can play while in class or at work) under the name MuKen. Cutting the group at p3 would not work, as you would immediately kill at p2, not only killing that stone but also guaranteeing eyes for your black group, which would allow you to kill the white group at your leisure. If he instead played at p2, then he could prevent you from making eyes, but it would then become a liberty race, one which he would lose anyway. Thus, I'd say his white group was certainly dead. Between that and his upper group also being dead, you have a massive lead in points. There wouldn't be any need for you to fight anymore, you could play a number of safe shoulder hits and capping plays to reduce his framework and just run the game to an easy win. His resignation was correct, IMO. Quote:
Actually, the fundamental rules are extremely simple; the only "real" rule is the capturing rule. When a group of stones has no adjacent open spaces it dies. The winner is the person with the most stones on the board at the end. The rules about territory and points and so on are designed to keep you from having to play the game through dozens of simple and uninteresting moves at the end, but it is very rare that they make a difference in determining the winner. They are more like a guideline for saying "I resign now instead of wasting time seeing who can place more stones inside their own territory before having to stop". The fact that such a complex game can develop from such a simple ruleset is a testament to the elegance of Go. Last edited by MuKen; 07-03-2008 at 03:06 AM. | |

Go is anything but simple.

True, but then you could also apply Komi to original rules as well. The main places where the different rulesets could still make a difference are 1) It could give one player a 1 point advantage when filling dame 2) It costs the player who has more separate groups an additional 2 points per extra group. Hikaru no Go baby ![]() Haha, but seriously, there's a lot of Go players where I worked last year, the majority of which got started because of watching Hikaru no Go. I started around the summer time, and played fairly obsessively since then. Do you play any online? |

I got into go when i stumbled upon it on the internet, at the time it looked like a simple game of taking up the most space, but i started reading about it online, and it really started to grow on me. I love the whole elegance of the game, how you place stones down and everything. Only when i went to japan did i start to really get into it. They had go classes i could take, i even tried to find a small mom and pop go parlor(Not as easy to find, as it turned out) becuase i loved small spaces to play anything, chess, checkers. After i gave up looking for a smaller venue, i signed up for a week long go program, which was being taught by 4 dan who spoke perfect english. Although i cant exactly remember his name. I left japan with a cheap go board, and two sets of stones...and ive been playing ever since. I dont play online as much as i used to starting out, most of the time i like to play self teaching games(although reenacting actual games, or actually playing againts myself is not my strength, im no bobby fischer(RIP) Just me and my board, and sometimes a go manual and tips i print off from the computer.

Wow, that's pretty neat getting to learn from a pro in Japan. I learned most of what I know just from reading and playing. |

You know what's funny,I was just reading about Go in Shonen Jump mag today. I read that some of the sets are $200 or $300 and up. The ones made with rare wood are $1000s I have never played before.I should try it.

I got lucky, he was only doing the courses for about 2 weeks. I arrived in japan after he was a week and one day into them. It wasnt anything elaborate, it was basically a beginners to intermediate tutorials on go.

I play on KGS as mpchebe. I'm fairly sure that guy lied to you about his skill level, because he didn't take advantage of your initial hesitancy at all. His play was, in a word, bad. He didn’t even play close to your level through the whole game. He played worse than I would, and I’m probably a 16k with how little I get to play lately. Don’t over think a bad player who can throw out a few terms or impress with some vocab.

In the spirit of posting games, this was a rather confusing resign I got from a recent game on DGS. By my reckoning the score appears to be fairly close when my opponent resigns, so I'm not sure if he saw something I didn't. DGS - Game #388973,134 |

It does look close, but you definitely have a lead that komi isn't going to cover. The white groups in the lower left aren't going to do much for him point-wise. I think it's cool to see such a straight forward territory game. Many times, people online seem to like to just attack, attack, and attack some more.
