Bush Says He Regrets Use of Iraq `Mission Accomplished' Banner - Yahoo! News - Source

Quote:
Nov. 12 (Bloomberg) -- President George W. Bush said he regrets the display of the ``Mission Accomplished'' sign as backdrop for a speech he gave about a month after the March 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq.
``To some, it said, well, `Bush thinks the war in Iraq is over,' when I didn't think that,'' he said in a CNN interview today. ``It conveyed the wrong message.''
The sign was hung on the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln on May 1, 2003, when Bush landed on the carrier wearing a flight suit to declare that major combat operations in Iraq were over. That speech has since served as a rallying point for critics of Bush's policies in Iraq.
Bush also cited other regrets in the CNN interview, which was conducted aboard the U.S.S. Intrepid in New York after a Veterans Day ceremony.
``I regret saying some things I shouldn't have said,'' Bush said. He cited comments he made after the Sept. 11 attacks, when he said of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden: ``I want justice. There's an old poster out West that said, 'Wanted, dead or alive.'''
He also said he regretted telling Iraqi insurgents in 2003: ``There are some who feel like that the conditions are such that they can attack us there. My answer is, bring 'em on.''
`Be Careful'
In the interview yesterday, he said, ``My wife reminded me that, `hey, as president of the United States, be careful what you say.'''
Bush, 62, also described his Nov. 10 meeting at the White House with his successor, President-elect Barack Obama, and said he asked former President Bill Clinton for advice on handling the transition.
``It was interesting to watch him go upstairs,'' Bush said of Obama's visit. ``He wanted to see where his little girls were going to sleep. Clearly, this guy is going to bring a sense of family to the White House, and I hope Laura and I did the same thing. But I believe he will, and I know his girls are on his mind and he wants to make sure that first and foremost, he is a good dad.''
Bush said he would return to Texas when he hands over the presidency Jan. 20 and may write a book.
``I want people to know what it was like to make some of the decisions I had to make,'' he said. ``I've had one of those presidencies where I've had to make some tough calls, and I want people to know the truth about what it was like sitting in the Oval Office.''

Sorry Dubya but it's a little too late for sympathy. So he admits that he made that decision on emotions and feeling rather logic and the better outcome for the country. Nice.

He's a typical Texan. Base everything on emotions or doctrine (which is emotionally charged for religious people) and not on rationalization and good observation.

Bush is going to be very lonely on January 21, 2009. Right now his approval rating is below Nixon's, and Nixon is the guy who had to resign out of embarrassment. I even read that he shopped around an autobiography and no one wanted to publish it. Oh well, his record is abysmal and I can't wait for him to leave.

He should have said this a few days after the banner, when the random bombings started, making it obvious that the war wasn't over.

Too late for sympathy indeed. He was better off not saying anything.

Sympathy for the fail that is his presidency, ya right never going to happen!
I say he should stick that mission accomplished right on his Texas home, and stick the words sent country into a recession above it.
Heck if he can't win the best president ever, at least he can win the worst.

As if Bush could'nt be more spineless. Now that he's on the way out he's going for the "Put yourself in my shoes!" bleeding heart crap. No one is going to buy that especially not the families of all the people that got killed in Iraq cause of him. I hope he gets what's coming to him. He may not get it by getting tried in court for all of the things he's done but he'll get whats due to him one way or another. Karma is a bitch.

I find it funny that he regrets the banner, more than his decision to go to war in the first place.

When Obama went to visit him, behind close doors he gave him a round house kick and an upper cut, I know it.

Not sure why its been ignored that while Bushs approval rating is lower then nixons

Congress and the senate have a lower approval rating then that.

Wasnt Obama and McCain both in that?

Interesting how everyone can put the blame of every problem the last 8 years on one man when in reality its the result of congress and the senate as well.

More people detested that an idiot can be named president of arguably the most powerful country in the World.

So immediately everything is pinned on the incompetent head of state.

To be fair he was an awful president but by no means the worst.

Why does Bush have low approval ratings? Mostly the war, in which congress was controlled by republicans

It's a negative approval rating of congress as a whole, not individual congressmen or a certain party.
Congress hasn't been able to do anything lately because any time they pass legislation, Bush vetoes it, and congress does not have enough dems to override the veto. Therefore, Bush is the problem.

That congress approval rating goes hand in hand with bush's, since for the past 8 years(Until recently) congress had been predominatly red.
