In one of history’s more absurd acts of totalitarianism, China has banned Buddhist monks in Tibet from reincarnating without government permission. According to a statement issued by the State Administration for Religious Affairs, the law, which goes into effect next month and strictly stipulates the procedures by which one is to reincarnate, is "an important move to institutionalize management of reincarnation." China bans reincarnation in Tibet Published: Aug. 3, 2007 at 7:26 PM BEIJING, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- China's communist leaders have forbidden reincarnation without government permission in largely Buddhist Tibet. The reincarnation ban is part of a 14-part regulation issued by the Chinese government in an attempt to limit the influence of the Dalai Lama, the exiled Tibetan religious leader, the Times of London reported Friday. The People's Republic of China invaded Tibet in 1950 and has attempted to consolidate its control of it since, designating it an autonomous region. Since the 12th century, Tibetan Buddhists have believed that reincarnated important religious leaders, known as tulkus, can be identified in young boys. Because tulkus have a large influence in the Himalayan region, the Chinese government has frequently sought to control the process of identifying the boys. The new regulations, which go into effect September 1, 2007, will make it illegal to identify the child reincarnation of the Dalai Lama without the approval of Chinese authorities.

Isn't this some religious/political way for the Chinese to have some control/say over who is the Dalai Lama? How does that help the government? Last edited by Enishi; 28-08-2007 at 06:39 PM. |

While at first this seems like an ammusing/mondane act by the Chinese government, the are basically trying to hamper the Buddhist influence in Tibet or whatnot and this is pretty serious. I don't really know how the Buddhist will get around it but seeing as the current Dali Lama is in exile, it'll probably something like extracting the boy to india or something along these lines.

From what I've understood a child is selected as a reborn lama through various test such as identifying which items belong to the lama in a previous life. If you're really interested, Kundun is a great movie about the current Dali lamas life and discuses the process of selection as well as the Chinese "reclaiming" the Tibetan territory and the Dali Lama's exile from Tibet. I also found this to be interesting: Quote:

Not surprising. The Chinese government has destroyed thousands of years of history which have been recorded by Buddhist monks and kept in the temples. Many never before seen by outsiders. Much of it has been burned very recently.

The obviously view buddism as a threat to their government. The did only take Tibet in 1950 or 60 something, though they probably think that these acts are lessening the Buddhist's influence in Tibet. Though, it is tragic that they'd so easily disregard historical documents and such--that's messed up.
