The derivative of lnx= (1/x) the integration of lnx, u need to use integration by parts or memorize it such that it will = xlnx-x

^ They say that lovers often pick up each other's habits. :p Integration by parts: You have your integral. Use the substitution uv - integral(v*du) You can assign u to be anything, but it's more convenient to choose something that is easier to differentiate. Letting u = lnx and dv/dx = 1 (that is the coefficient of dx), we get: u = ln x dv = 1 .: du = 1/x dx and v = x Making the substitution: lnx*x - integral(x*1/x dx) The x's drop out and you get: xlnx - integral(1dx) You know that the integral of dx = x .: integral(lnx dx) = xlnx - x Yes! I did it without my Calculus text!

How does the Second Partials Test for finding relative extreme of functions of two variables work? I know d=fxx(a,b)fyy(a,b)-[fxy(a,b)]^2, but what is this "d" supposed to stand for?
