Vandals desecrated 148 graves in the Muslim section of a military cemetery in northern France, hanging a pig's head on one of the headstones, the police said Sunday.
President Nicolas Sarkozy called the attack "a hateful act" and about 100 police officers were sent to the Notre-Dame de Lorette cemetery near Arras to hunt for clues.
Jean-Pierre Valensi, a prosecutor, said the vandals had struck overnight Saturday, marking insults on the graves. "They directly referred to Islam and there were also insults directed at the justice minister," Valensi said, referring to Rachida Dati, who was born in France to parents from North Africa.
Dati issued a statement condemning a "hateful act" with "racist connotations" that "hurts the memory of our dead, of the veterans who gave their lives for France."
The desecration came almost exactly a year after youths daubed Nazi inscriptions and swastikas on Muslim tombs in the same cemetery in Ablain Saint-Nazaire.
"This is a most unacceptable act of racism and the president shares the pain of France's Muslim community," Sarkozy's office said in a statement. Prime Minister François Fillon called it a "revolting act" and said those responsible would be found.

The police arrested two men in the 2007 attack. They were convicted and each was sentenced to a year in prison.
Notre-Dame de Lorette is one of the biggest World War I French military cemeteries and was built on the site of a battlefield where many French and German soldiers died from October 1914 to October 1915.
In accordance with custom, the graves of Muslim soldiers are turned toward Mecca.
During World War I, France mobilized about 600,000 colonial troops, including many Muslims from Algeria and Tunisia, of whom 78,000 were killed. About 1.2 million French soldiers were killed in the war.
France's estimated five million Muslims makes them Europe's largest Muslim community, making up about 8 percent of the population.
Dalil Boubaker, rector of the Paris mosque, said on France Info radio: "These are probably the tombs of heroes who fell in combat. This is a hateful, scandalous act, an insult to all Muslims." The MRAP anti-racism group said this latest desecration showed that "Islamophobia" had taken root in France.

I don't understand the French people, how they can desecrate the deads' respect?! And I don't say it about this specific act, they did it before with Jews' graves and they desecrate synagogues and beating[even murder] Jews and Muslims for no reason.
I'm only look at the French nation as a bunch of racists and they not change anything on the last decades. They should shame their selves.

Long-standing historic trends of the French. French people have not changed much since the late 18th century. The French have been desecrating graves for some time. Go visit Jim Morrison's grave sometime and see most of the cemetery absolutely vandalized. Shit, when cemeteries became too full in Paris, they put the skulls and leg bones in a tunnel and made fun of them by putting them in funny shapes and whatnot and there are no markers for any of the remains. There are the remains of 6 million people down there.

WWI memorials have been vandalized and grave robbed as well. There were French soldiers with their bayonets walking down the trench when a German mortar hit near them and caused the trench to collapse on top of them, burying them alive. The bayonet blades stood perfectly up through the soil. That became a memorial. Now there are only 2 bayonets left there because some assholes actually stole their guns. They did this gradually gun by gun.


This is just pure hatred. But it's important not to go after all French people because of this. There is no doubt that there are some very very very bad apples in French society.

Last time I checked, tombstones were not news papers. They are private property with no place in open expression. That's called vandalism at the very least.

It's vandalism, but I guess ELK is just looking for a response from the Muslim community here on NM. The idiot that did it was expressing his view against Islam, and it's a hateful act towards the Muslim society. But you can't count this as freedom of speech in any way.

^Regardless of any reason, desecrating someone's grave is simply wrong in every way, shape or form. A year in prison is not really sufficient in my opinion.

In French prison it may be. They have a bit of a reputation.

Of course ELK will come in here and say something such as: "Desecrating graves is to you guys what depicting Muhammad with a bomb for a head is to Muslims!"

That's when I say: "I disagree with what the Danish newspaper published. However, I was disgusted that protesters went beyond expression and killed innocent people who had nothing to do with the cartoons.

In this situation I would be against a mob killing random French people.

But desecrating a grave is illegal and a very personal to families (the dead are gone, they don't care). A privately owned newspaper is impersonal and a form of expression. You don't have to read it."

I agree with the most part of ur response, yet however, i disagree with the last part. If the Mohamed cartoons had a mocking intent, then it wouldn't have been the least bit wise to publish it. It's simply rude and disrespectful.

Umm desecrating private property is vandalism, i don't care that the attack was specifically Islamic in nature, someone could write 'fuck this homo' on a homosexuals tombstone and i would oppose it for the same reason.

Btw nice of you to state that those who respect freedom of expression are anti-Muslims, i guess when you want to justify your hatred, you have to make yourself believe the other side is a racist.

Kind of like how many arabs in the middle-east justify killing Jews because the Jews themselves are evil.
